First People
The Kaurna people were the first inhabitants of the Tea Tree Gully area.
The Kaurna people would camp by the Little Para River. They stayed near the springs and waterholes at a place now called Snake Valley Bridge.
In 1836 about 500 Kaurna people lived in the area.
Effects of European Settlement
The arrival of Europeans into the area had several negative affects
- they did not have access to their traditional lands, which affected their way of life
- they were exposed to European diseases and many became sick and died.
- The survivors were taken away from their lands to Poonindie near Port Lincoln
Kaurna Heritage
The Kaurna people's language is evident in some of the local place names. Para comes from the word Pari meaning water.Yatala means running by the side of the river.
