Tea Tree Gully
Tea Tree Gully was a popular gully ( a gully is like a small valley, with hills either side and a water flow in the middle ) because bullock wagons could use to go over the Mt. Lofty Ranges and also there were permanent springs for water.
Squatters
The first Europeans to settle in the area were squatters. Squatters are people who live on the land but have no legal rights. Squatters may have been in the area from as early as 1837.
George Anstey
George Anstey arrived from Van Dieman's Land ( now known as Tasmania ) in 1838. He has sheep to sell in the newly formed colony of South Australia. His sheeep grazed in the Tea Tree Gully area. "Anstey's Hill" has been named after him.
John Barton Hack
In the 1840's John Barton Hack surveyed the area and villages and farms appeared.
William Halden was the founder of the first settlement of Hope Valley. He named it Hope Valley because the first buildings were destroyed by fire but he saw "hope" for the future.
Many of the first settlers were of German descent.
