Houghton was one of the first villages in the Tea Tree Gully district.
John Richardson
John Richardson and his wife Elizabeth, arrived in South Australia on the ship the "Lord Goderich" in 1838.
By 1840, John Richardson bought 600 acres from John Hack and named his new property Houghton Lodge. It was named after a place in Durham, England called "Houghton Le Spring".

The village grew and in 1842 the first inn "The Traveller's Inn" was built, followed by the first church in 1847 and the first school in 1847.The first post office was built in 1848.
This was the largest village in the area as it used to be on the only track through the hills to the new settlements.
